We lost some of our biggest stars last year, with some gone long before their time. Unfortunately the list, of iconic and famous personalities that have passed away, is not a short one.
The year 2014 is end and the entertainment industry lost many stars – some big and some small – who will not be part of the coming year. Those who left us in 2014 have left a vacuum that might not be filled in years to come. Let’s start off with the local celebrities, men and women who gave their life to the entertainment industry.
The celebrity deaths of 2014: Stars we've lost:
Sana Khan:
Model and actress Sana Khan whose career was cut short by a car accident in the month of March, 2014.
Zill-e-Huma:
Daughter of late Madam Noor Jehan and a singer herself, Zill-e-Huma died of kidney diseases in May.
Ubaida Ansari:
The month of March took away radio and TV actress Ubaida Ansari who could be seen in many plays in roles of mother and saas.
Sumbul Talat:
Veteran TV actress Sumbul Talat, wife of another actor Talat Iqbal lost her battle to cancer in United States during the month of September.
Maqsood Hassan and Habib Wali Mohammad:
It was the same month in which Maqsood Hassan and Habib Wali Mohammad also left their fans forever. While Maqsood Ahmed was popular till his last days due to his comic roles and short height, Habib Wali Mohammad is remembered for his film ghazals from the 70s including Aashian Jal Gaya and Aaj Janay Ki Zid Na Karo, from music composer Sohail Rana’s Baazi and Badal Aur Bijli respectively.
Ghayur Akhtar:
Versatile actor Ghayur Akhtar who was most famous for his roles in PTV plays including Sona Chandi as well as Khawaja & Sons.
Laiq Ahmed:
The first one to bid farewell was PTV compere Laiq Ahmed who garnered huge following during the one-channel days where he used to host scientific, political and current affairs programs.
Agha Waheed ur Rehman:
Veteran actor Agha Waheed ur Rehman also left for heavenly abode a month later but can still be seen in various (re-run) skits of Fifty Fifty as well as countless PTV plays of yesteryear.
Aziz Merthi:
Film director and writer Aziz Merthi known for his costume dramas and Munir Zarif, the last surviving brother of the Zarif clan also left their fans forever.
International Stars:
Robin Williams:
Known for his gift of making people laugh, this comedic legend’s untimely death made millions cry. News of his apparent suicide on August 11 sent shock waves through the entertainment industry and left his countless fans heartbroken.
Philip Seymour Hoffman:
Another unforgettable Oscar winner, Hoffman was described as one of the most versatile and original actors known to infuse his on-screen characters with both humor and emotional complexity. Film and theatre heavyweight, Phillip was discovered dead on Feb. 2 after overdosing on heroin in his NYC apartment.
Phillip Hughes:
The Australian cricket team witnessed an overwhelming outpouring of emotion over the very recent death of one of the sport’s youngest player. The 25-year-old was playing for South Australia against New South Wales when he collapsed after he was hit on the lower back of the neck by a bouncer. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but died on Thursday, November 27th.
Zohra Sehgal:
Zohra Sehgal was the grand old lady of Bollywood. The actress lived till 102 years before she succumbed to a cardiac arrest. Her last onscreen performance was playing a grandmother in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya in 2007.
